The event

The 21st Salt Water Intrusion Meeting (SWIM21 - AZORES 2010) will be held this year from June 21 to 25 at the University of Azores, in the island of S. Miguel, Azores, Portugal. It will be a joint organization between the CVRM Geo-Systems Centre, IST - Lisbon Technical University and CVARG Centre of Volcanology and Evaluation of Geological Risks - University of Azores.

In keeping with 42 years of the Salt Water Intrusion Meeting tradition, the meeting in Azores will consist of an informal environment where students and those new to the field can meet established and well-known salt water intrusion scientists and engineers.

The 21st Salt Water Intrusion Meeting aims to provide a forum for scientists, engineers, water resource managers and planners who are actively involved in and/or affected by salt water intrusion problems, management of coastal aquifers and submarine groundwater discharge to share their research, ideas and recommendations. This includes those studying the marine environment as well as those from the terrestrial side.

Participants from academia, private consulting firms, local, state, and national government agencies will interact in an informal and relaxed environment to summarize and review state-of-the-art methods for investigating salt water intrusion. It will be a unique opportunity to receive feedback on their research and management issues and to form collaborative relationships with those encountering similar problems.

There will be an optional pre-conference short course (16 to 20 June, 2010) on SEAWAT: a MODFLOW/MT3DMS-based computer program for simulation of three-dimensional variable-density groundwater flow and coupled with multi-species solute and heat transport.

The previous Salt Water Intrusion Meeting in Florida, USA, 2008 was the first time the meeting was held outside of Europe and combined SWIM and SWICA participants. This year the meeting is back to Europe and the venue of the 2012 SWIM meeting is planned to be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
